Today, December 29th, is Pepper Pot Day.
This isn't a celebration of the crockery used for holding pepper, whether ground or in corns, but is instead for a type of thick soup or stew that is also known as Philadelphia Pepper Pot.
Allegedly, the soup dates back to the American Revolutionary War. It is made using beef tripe, vegetables and pepper (plus other seasonings). It was originally apparently made out of anything to hand, so pretty much anything could be added. There are other variations, including a seafood dish.
