The Skellig Islands lie around eight miles off Bolus Head, in County Kerry, Ireland. From a wildlife angle, they are enowned for the large populations of puffins and gannets, but there is also an ancient monastery that is designated a UNESCO orld Heritage Site. There are two islands, Little Skellig and Great Skellig, and this image, shot from a friend's boat, shows the gannets soaring over Little Skellig at sunset. There are around 30,000 pairs of northern gannets in the colony, which makes it one of the world’s largest, and adds to the islands being one of the country’s most important seabird sites. The water around the islands is thriving with sealife, too, with many seals resident, and dolphins, minke whales and leatherback turtles all having been recorded.
