So recently someone alerted me to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZY6YKM_3jo&feature=plcp
Apologies if by the time you're reading this and the link no longer works - hopefully my copyright claim against them will have resulted in it being removed from youtube.
In short, it is 'One Night Stand' a film made by Jack Tew and myself in early 2010 that someone has taken and put a music track on the back of it and claimed it as their own music video.
They did not ask for permission from either Jack or myself and as you can see in the above image, he is even claiming the video as his own work, with only a very loose credit to Jack Tew.
When questioned the chap fully admitted his guilt and just said the music was 'a good fit' and that no money had been made from it. Interestingly though it had gained over 45,000 views, so even if he wasn't directly making money from it, his youtube channel is still gaining much exposure from click throughs and the like. Every time I have loaded the film there has been an advert before it, so he's probably even making money from the 'monetisation' feature that youtube now employs.
He asked if he should remove it...i'm waiting for youtube to forcibly do it to him, prove a point that he can't go around doing things like this without permission.
Interestingly this isn't the first time our film has been copied. Someone once sent us a link to another youtube video, where a danish student had completely reshot the film with his own actors and set, it was unbelievable, literally shot-for-shot. Ofcourse I had youtube remove it, and I also sent a strongly worded email to the Danish University where he had clearly submitted it as his own work...I never received a reply from them. Funnily enough though the chap got in touch with me though and protested that it wasn't a copy, as some shots and dialogue were different. I had no time for him.
The only solace I can take away from all this is that clearly our film is well received, otherwise people wouldn't want to copy it as much!
