A national emergency is being declared against the Polio in Pakistan, but nothing has been done yet to win our war against polio. Pakistan has been the major Polio Centre in the region as the ratio of Polio cases reported in Pakistan is much larger as compared to the neighboring countries. The polio elimination battles in Pakistan have been experiencing major setbacks as 32 polio laborers have been killed since December 2012. 4 districts of Punjab and Khyber PakhtoonKhuwa, 13 of Sindh, 6 of FATA, 5 of Balouchistan are entitled as high risk areas. On the other hand, 51 (69%) of the polio affirmed cases are from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), distinguishing it as the single real polio virus store in Pakistan. The Government of Pakistan has highlighted various explanations behind the developing polio endemic in Pakistan referring to basically militancy and 'refusal families'. To take a step against polio, government should issue a Polio Certificate to all babies after their vaccination, and they must impose a law against those parents who are not willing for vaccination of their children.
If we look into past, the worst polio year is 2014, as up till now 262 polio cases are reported. This is the highest number of cases, if we compare it to the last 5 years. 2012 had only 56 and in 2013 only 53 cases were reported. 2011 was a bit hard, and 198 cases were reported. Since, using these facts, it is clear that instead of improving we are declining, and the increasing numbers of cases are a proof that we are doing nothing for eradication of Polio from Pakistan. Because of our carelessness for Polio, WHO has declared Pakistan as a polio exporting country and we cannot travel in the world without a polio vaccination certificate. This is the matter of shame! The reason for this ban is that Pakistan’s health sector is a completely ignored sector, and the budget allotted to health is the least. The problem is that we cannot prioritize the things. The issues that need attention, we have put them to the last number, and that is the reason we are going backwards. The big problem is that in Pakistan vaccination efforts are often stalled, making it worse to fight against polio. Government, who is already taking steps, should take polio more seriously and should make strategies to deal polio as a threat, should provide security to the vaccinators or else the disease could spread around the whole country.
