How to Throw a Pool Party
Finish off the summer with a party to remember
From plunge pools with expansive sun decks in tropical settings to relaxing hot tubs with killer sunset views, a stunning pool takes a vacation from so-so to spectacular. The picturesque pools in our gallery are so special, you may feel guilty not sharing them with your family and friends. And to help you make the most of every pool-side minute, here are legendary host Jimmy Im’s tips for throwing an unforgettable pool party.
1. Music is Essential
Background music is key at any event, helping fine-tune the ambiance and setting the atmosphere for the soiree. Music also helps the brain release the ‘feel-good’ chemical dopamine; bottom line: music makes people happy. While playing music is easy, choosing the right type of music to please a crowd can often be challenging. If you’re taking a vacation with family or friends, you’ll most already know their music preferences, so when creating playlists remember to add in a few classics that everyone will enjoy. Themes are also appreciated when it comes to mood music. If you’re throwing a pool party in Hawaii, how about some ukelele songs, or a mix of light calypso and reggae in the Caribbean?

2. Think about Decor
The pool may already be a scene stealer, but embellishing the outdoor area makes for a more festive environment. Small décor touches can transform the pool into a fun oasis, which not only helps set the mood but it also impresses your guests the moment they arrive. Colorful floral arrangements enhance the scene, as do other outdoor accessories like tiki torches or candles, beach balls in the pool and even a separate play area for the kids. Again, it’s fun to match the theme with the destination you’re in (leis in Hawaii, laurel wreathes in Greece, etc). Flower petals in the pool are always romantic. Remember not to go overboard; it’s the small touches that will make the pool setting stand out.

3. Don’t let your guests go hungry (or thirsty!)
One of the joys of a pool party is bonding over food and cocktails. It’s also a good way to keep your guests around instead of having them leave early due to hunger pangs. Food and drinks are essential to any pool party, and light bites are best suited for an outdoor event. Remember, most everyone will be in swimsuits, and no one wants to feel or look bloated from an overstuffed stomach. Finger-food like vegetable platters, fruit salads, light sandwiches and hummus are good bets. When it comes to drinks, a bartender serving classic cocktails and wine is a sure-fire way to impress guests. If it’s a casual soiree, punch bowls are a huge trend this year. – and nothing helps beat the heat like a refreshing glass of homemade sangria. Don’t forget frozen treats like ice-cream sandwiches and popsicles for the kids.

4. Think like a Guest
As a host, you’ll be admired for thinking of your guests’ comfort beyond food and beverages. This includes providing essentials that most guests won’t think about bringing. Supplying an array of sunscreens is a thoughtful gesture, as well as giving out the wifi password and providing phone chargers. Be sure to stock up on fluffy towels, and try to create plenty of shaded areas for those who are sensitive to direct sunlight. Even setting out a basket of colorful sunglasses shows you care about the details.

5. Capture Memories
Nothing fosters memories with better than photos. While many guests will be taking their own photos and uploading to social media, why not go the extra step and hire a photographer to take photos for an hour or two. Professional photographers have a better gauge on angles and lighting, making everyone look “red carpet ready.” If you have the budget, portable photo booths (like ShutterBooth) are also a fun way to encourage guests to interact. Don’t forget to create an online gallery after the event so your guests can pick and choose their favorites photos to keep and, most importantly, cherish the fun they had at your pool party.
