To a question on what has caused the death of so many farmers in India, the Union Agriculture Minister in a written reply informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday that according to the National Crime Records Bureau it was illness, drugs, dowry, love affairs or impotency that caused the death of more than 1,400 farmers in India this year. His remarks have drawn sharp reactions from the Opposition and have put the BJP government on back foot.
