DIRECT PROPORTION

Two quantities are said to be in direct proportion (or directly proportional), if one is a constant multiple of the other, i.e. y is said to be directly proportional to x if y = kx where k is a constant.

Example of Direct Proportion (Direct Variation)

Justin pays $40 per day for his stay in a hotel.
So, his rental charges depend upon the number of days he would stay in the hotel.
We write this direct variation as y = 40x, where y is the rental charges and x is the number of days that he would stay in the hotel.

Compound Proportion

The proportion involving two or more quantities is called Compound Proportion

APPLICATION OF COMPOUND PROPORTION

Ratios and proportion find a great use in real and in our day-to-day lives. Among the common applications of ratios and proportion are:

1.       Finding equivalent ratios

2.       Estimating the time that would take for a certain task to be completed given some conditions.

3.       Converting measurements such as km/h to m/s

4.       Gears in car transmission.

5.       Solving different types of proportion.

6.       Determining the quantities that should make up a mixture.
