Public servants or public employees?

Posted on at

I was writing something earlier and I was reminded of a real pet peeve of mine. I can't stand when people call public employees "public servants". (DISCLAIMER: I am a public employee)

It seems to be that the only people who call public employees "servants" are those who believe that the "servants" are overpaid, lazy, and indebted to the taxpayers for their jobs. I've read hundreds of nasty comments on news articles bashing "public servants" and basically saying that they should shut up, be grateful that they have a job, and just accept whatever salary/benefits they are offered. You'd think it was the 1700 or 1800s dealing with the British aristocracy.

So, what side of the fence are you on? Are they public employees or public servants?
