Breaking News: New England Patriots backup Quarterback Ryan Mallett has been traded to the Houston Texans fr an unspecified draft pick. Rumor has it that it is a sixth round draft pick.
Houston Texans also have released QB Case Keenum to make room for Ryan Mallett.
The Texans already have Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and if Fitzpatrick struggles Mallet could be inserted into the lineup very quickly.
Ryan Mallet was a promising pick in the draft from the University of Arkansas who was expected to be picked in the first round. Mallett slid to the third round where he was picked by the New England Patriots who are famous for taking undervalued Quarterbacks and making them stars.
Mallett has shown a lot of ability when he has come in as a back up for Tom Brady and was continuing to look good this preseason. The Texans may have found their franchise Quarterback to replace Matt Shaub who is now an Oakland Raider. Mallett was expected to be the future replacement when Brady finally retires.
With all the talent the Texans have on their roster this move could quickly return them to competing with the Colts for division supremacy. We will just have to wait and see if Mallet can handle the spotlight or if he is a bust. A few years ago Seattle traded for Aaron Rodgers backup, Matt Flynn because he looked great as Rodgers backup. The trade turned out to be a bust when Russell Wilson took his starting job before the preseason was over.
The Texans have taken a small gamble that could pay off big time for their franchise. I am excited to see the results this season and next.
