Rainworks: The Invisible Street Art That Only Appears on Rainy Days

You all know the rainy day struggle: long commutes, that icky feeling after stepping in a puddle, that lethargic stay-in-bed feeling. But what if you could look forward to the rainy weather? One Seattle artist went out to prove just that.

Rainworks, as artist Peregrine Church is calling it, is a series of invisible street art pieces which appear out of nowhere once it rains. The works include whimsical illustrations, uplifting messages, and as this video below demonstrates, hopscotches. Church uses a non-toxic, super hydrophobic coating to stencil messages and artworks on the concrete sidewalks around the city.

This idea began as a project to bring cheer when everything becomes foggy and the rain feels like it’s never-ending. He added that when the Seattle rain inevitably hits, the designs stay completely dry, leaving messages like “Stay Dry out There” to jolt people out of their everyday routines. The rain activated artworks offer amusing distractions for any soggy passerby.\

“The purpose of Rainworks is to turn rainy days into something to look forward to,” Church mentions in an interview.
