RED NOTICE AUDITION SIDES

The below monologue is taken from a modern adaptation of the opening canto of Dante’s Inferno. In this adaptation, Dante’s harrowing journey through the Inferno is rendered into the adventures of a young girl, MARGOT, living in New York City. In her monologue, MARGOT, now a few years older, reflects back on the moment she first stepped foot into the city. She talks about her first impressions of this intimidating place after leaving home.

Below the monologue, you will see the original version of Canto I , which is provided for you to make the necessary comparisons and draw further meaning from the text.

Further below, you will see a brief dialog between MARGOT and VICKY. This adaptation is taken from Canto XXIV and alludes to the Seventh Ditch in the Inferno, where Dante finds himself amongst a group of thieves. Vicky’s character is drawn from the poet Virgil, Dante’s mentor, who leads the way throughout Dante’s journey in the Inferno and gives him knowledge, strength, and life lessons. Explore the relationship between MARGOT and VICKY by referring to that of DANTE and VIRGIL in this canto.

MARGOT

Leaving home was hard. Coming here? Imagine waking up from a dream and finding yourself in a place so familiar yet foreign... so full of mysteries that you want to get lost in it to solve the riddles. When I try to recall the trip, not much comes to mind except the city skyline I watched in wonder from across the bridge. Sleep was dripping down my face as we came to a stop. Those that stayed behind said I’d be walking on fire if I left. They said the city was chaotic, dangerous. Well here I am now standing amongst the chaos, faceless crowds, endless streets, buildings that speak... Okay, let me rewind. At first, I was scared. When I got off the bus, fear and uncertainty settled in my heart in a single sharp attack. But then the surrounding buildings wrapped me up like a blanket, and the warm rays of sun landed at my feet as if to say, “Don’t worry. We’ll guide your steps.” New York City was a clown. Still is. Wears a colorful, spooky mask on its face. You see the beauty through the cracks once you look at things carefully. Then you feel calm like you’re safe on shore. Like you’re home.

Canto I

The Dark Wood

Midway through the journey of our life, I found
myself in a dark wood, for I had strayed
from the straight pathway to this tangled ground.
How hard it is to tell of, overlaid
with harsh and savage growth, so wild and raw
the thought of it still make me feel afraid.
Death scarce could be more bitter. But to draw
the lessons of the good that came my way.
I will describe the other things I saw.
Just how I entered there I cannot say,
so full of sleep when I began to veer
that I did not see that I had gone astray
from the one true path. But once I had drawn near
the bottom of a hill at the far remove
of the valley that had pierced my heart with fear,
I saw its shoulders mantled from above
by the warm rays of the planet that gives light
to guide our steps, wherever we may rove.
At last I felt some calming of the fright
that had allowed the lake of my heart no rest
while I endured the long and piteous night.
And as a drowning man with heaving chest
escapes the current and, once safe on shore,
turns back to see the dangers he has passed,
so too my mind, still lost in flight, once more
turned back to see the passage that had never
let anyone escape alive before.

EXT. BROOKLYN. LATE AFTERNOON.

A girl stands below the MANHATTAN BRIDGE staring at the buzzing cars above. A look of fear and confusion settles in her eyes. This is MARGOT, a 19 year-old, attractive, athletic type.

In front of Margot, closer to the water stands VICKY, a bright-eyed 23 year-old. She turns around to face Margot and extends her hand in Margot’s direction.

It’s a brisk spring afternoon. Late March. The sun is about to set any minute.

VICKY
Come on!

MARGOT
I’m not so sure about this.

VICKY
We walked all the way here.
You can’t back out now.

MARGOT
Why don’t we just take the
subway?

VICKY
Because...

MARGOT
Vicky, I’m wearing my best
stilettos. They’re going to
get ruined!

VICKY
And why would you wear your best
stilettos to a walk on a Sunday
afternoon?

MARGOT
Are you serious? You never
know who you’re going to run
into in this city.

VICKY
Who do you expect to run into?
James Bond, your dream man?

MARGOT
Anything is possible.

VICKY
Connery or Brosnan?

MARGOT
Is that a real question?

Vicky fixes her eyes on Margot. There is a pause.

MARGOT
Craig!

VICKY
Okay, let’s get this over with,
shall we?

MARGOT
What?

VICKY
You need to cross this bridge
right now if you want to get over
your fear of heights.

MARGOT
But I’m...

VICKY
Remember what Dante said: Rise!
Let your soul overcome your
breathlessness, for unless the
heavy body lets it fail, the soul
will always prove victorious.

MARGOT
Right. I can’t believe I forgot
about that. And I can’t believe
you still remember.

Vicky grabs Margot’s hand and pulls her towards herself.

MARGOT
Alright, alright! I’m ready. I’m
strong!

They walk up the stairs that lead to the bridge’s entrance.
The Manhattan skyline appears in front of them in all its
glamour.

MARGOT
You go first.

VICKY
(with a smile)
With pleasure.

MARGOT
What now?

VICKY
It’s just funny how you’re obsessed
with all those espionage movies,
but you’re still afraid of heights.

MARGOT
I’m not obsessed with the movies.
I do like the real stuff that goes
on. Like murder and robberies...

VICKY
Wow. Those do sound like a lot
of fun. Feel like I’m missing out.

MARGOT
Speaking of which: Have you heard
about the Pink Panther robberies?

VICKY
No. Want to tell me as we cross the
bridge?

Vicky leads the way and Margot follows her with timid
steps.

MARGOT
(shouting)
Well there has been a robbery at
the Harry Winston in Paris by these
jewel thieves. The Interpol calls
them Pink Panthers.

As they get to the middle of the bridge and the sun slowly sets, the City is transformed into a gutter of darkness and they suddenly find themselves in a ditch filled with tens of dozens of serpents. Groups of naked people walk around, their hands tied behind with serpents. A serpent darts at a sinner’s neck, flares, burns, and turns to ash as it falls into a heap. As it lies destroyed on the ditch’s floor, the loose dust gathers by itself and takes its former shape once more and the serpent is born again.

Style

Our setting, New York City, is central to the stories told in each episode. We look at the city as Gotham, as the Inferno. In order to survive in Gotham, our characters need to be strong. Vicky and Margot are both powerful and dominant characters who have the ability to manipulate people and circumstances when necessary. To get an idea of the style and wardrobe we’ll have in the series, take a look at the images on the links below.

Imagery

Just like the style, the imagery that will be depicted in the series will be a little bit on the dark side. Merging modern day events with fantastical elements is something we’re going to explore in each episode. The sketches on the links below are drawn by the famous 19th century artist and illustrator, Gustave Dore, who was a commissioned worker hired to illustrate the stories told in Dante’s Inferno. Take a look at them to see what inspired our cinematography.
