Fan’s of the 1970’s Supeman movies and more recent remakes will find this classic cartoon episode of Superman from 1941 a nostalgic treat to watch:
As in the movie, Superman is from the far advanced planet Krypton and is the sole survivor sent to earth in a rocket ship after his planet explodes. He is described by the narrator as ‘faster than a speeding bullet’ and a ‘man of steel.’ He also doubles up as mild mannered reporter Clark Kent.
In this particular episode a mad scientist sends a warning to the Daily Planet (where Superman works as Kent and admires fellow Reporter Lois Lane from afar) about how he will strike at midnight. Lois is then sent on this mission but is grabbed and tied up by the mad scientist who says he will give her ‘the greatest story of destruction the world has ever known.’
As a bridge smashes with cars and people falling into the river, you know this is a job for Superman!
Despite the absence of the notorious 70’s musical score, this cartoon is watchable in its own right and has its own dramatically effective music to enhance the story. There are subtle touches such as an evil bird belonging to the mad scientist that also adds to the atmosphere and tension when Lois is captured.
The animation itself is very impressive for its time and it is really hard to believe this cartoon is over 70 years old! It is easy to see why we have inherited a ‘Super’ legacy!
