On 22nd September 1735, Sir Robert Walpole moved into his new official residence at 10 Downing Street.
10 Downing Street, known as Number 10, is the residence of the UK's First Lord of the Treasury, said office now usually being held by the Prime Minister.
Sir Robert is considered to be the first de facto Prime Minister of Great Britain, although the office was never officially established and just came into being.
The house had been gutted, converted and expanded into two neighbouring properties after Sir Robert was gifted it by King George II, and he and his family moved into it from St James's Square on this date.
