Russia Joins World Trade Organization, by Ambassador mo

After one of longest accession negotiations (18 years), WTO membership should reduce protectionist measures and enhance competitiveness of the Russian economy. Some speculate that it may even impact corruption and further open Russia’s markets. China had already joined a decade earlier. Russia, perhaps with its now very valuable resources, from minerals to grains, perhaps felt no sense of urgency, while industries left over from Soviet times and presumably still transforming to greater efficiency feared the influx and impact of new competition Other notable countries still not members since the collapse of Soviet era communism include Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia (See list below). Montenegro is expected to join during this session along with Russia and Samoa. (Above MAP from WTO prior to new members) Perhaps ironically, China and the US are already engaged in a mini-trade war so far confined to Chinese tire exports to US, and US auto exports to China. These are the type of things that the WTO is intended to address and temper, (indeed the WTO had deemed Chinese tire exports to be violating subsidy guidelines).
