Lay's Potato Chips is currently running a “Do Us a Flavour” contest here in Canada. There are four flavours to choose from: Bacon Poutine; Cinnamon Bun; Wavy Jalapeño Mac'N'Cheese; Kettle Cooked Tzatziki. Last night I got a chance to taste all but the mac and cheese flavour, when hubby brought home some 66 g bags for a taste test (he'd already had the mac and cheese one, so didn't bring it home – sadly!)
I thought I'd share some of my thoughts on these flavours with you all, and see if anyone else has tried these new flavours.
LAY'S CINNAMON BUN CHIPS
Wrong! Just wrong. This flavour is so sweet, and it really does taste like a cinnamon bun. But it was never meant to be put on a chip. In my opinion, this should be the first flavour to go.
LAY'S BACON POUTINE CHIPS
Not even close! While these chips aren't a total turnoff, as the cinnamon bun chips were, they didn't taste like either bacon or poutine. They were too thin. The taste and feel was flat. They lacked any sort of zest or zing. I wouldn't buy them again.
LAY'S TZATZIKI KETTLE CHIPS
Of the three I tried, these were the best. I loved the crunch of the kettle cooked potatoes, and the taste definitely reminded me of something creamy, something dairy. The ingredients include “extractives” (who uses that as a noun?) of cucumber, dill and yogurt.
I couldn't taste the cucumber, and honestly I didn't miss it. The dill is an ingredient I really could have done without (too much like a dill pickle chip.) But I would have liked to see more garlic, which to me is the signature flavour in any tzatziki.
The only problem I really had with these chips was that the aftertaste was too close to salt and vinegar chips. Not that there seemed to be any vinegar in the ingredients, but somehow there was something that had that sharp quality, that little bit of a bite. It was more than anything I'd associate with either yogurt or sour cream, even in a chip flavour. I could definitely do without that part.
So there's my review for three of the new Lay's chip flavours. What did you think of them? If you're from the US or another region that has different flavours on offer, I'd love to hear about what's good where you live!
