Scents And Triggered Memories

I can probably bet that most of you will admit that hearing a certain song can take you back to a specific moment in time. That is most definitely the case for me, as I could easily put together a soundtracks of my life. It's amazing how a piece of music can trigger so many memories, and I also find that to be the case with scents.

For example, whenever the first few drops of rain hit the ground, that sweet smell never fails to transport me back to Scotland. It rains there on a pretty regular basis, which means that scent ends up delivering all sorts of great little moments from my childhood.

Another one came today when I took a quick grocery run to Wal-Mart. They were in the process of wheeling out some fresh bread from the bakery, and that smell was quick to assault my senses. I love bread, and I particularly loves how it smells when it is being baked.

This is another scent that takes me back to Scotland and to a little bakery that used to operate through the night. The bakery didn't actually have a store front, and was instead part of a little industrial estate. I assume they mush have made their goods and shipped them out to the bakeries in town.

Their specialty was dinner rolls, and it was those that I always craved. A little knock on the back door of their establishment would always end with money and rolls changing hands in a transaction that somehow felt illegal. Those rolls would still be warm when I got home, so I would quickly slather on some damson jam and wash the whole thing down with a big glass of milk....YUMMY!!
