On January 17th 1912 the expedition led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott reached the South Pole.
Scott had previously led an Antarctic expedition in 1901-4, called the Discovery Expedition, although this failed to reach the pole. The second expedition, from 1910-12, was the Terra Nova Expedition and was ill-fated, resulting in the death of the entire party.
Despite Scott's fame for reaching the pole, it is notable that he actually only arrived there second. An expedition led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to the pole by 34 days.
