Dominique Strauss-Kahn, IMF’s Managing Director and top official has been arrested and charged in New York City for a "criminal sexual act", attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment. The alleged crime apparently occurred at NY’s French affiliated hotel chain Sofitel, and according to police reports Mr. Strauss-Kahn tried to flee the hotel to NY’s JFK Airport where he was arrested on the tarmac as the plane was preparing to take-off to Paris.
French President Candidate
Mr. Strauss-Kahn is a French national, and he was expected to run for the French Presidency challenging Nicolas Sarkozy. Mr. Strauss-Kahn would normally have diplomatic immunity, but not for a sexual offense presumably unrelated to his IMF function.
Arrest Regardless of Guilt has Immense Ramifications - Refrain from Judgment
Normally, we should be hesitant to report such preliminary news. Even though police reports have been leaked indicating the circumstances of the alleged crime, we have not heard from the accused regarding this episode. However, this stands to become an incident with immense implications beyond Mr. Strauss-Kahn to the IMF, United Nations and Europe.
IMF Statement on Arrest
The IMF has already released a statement through Ms. Caroline Atkinson, Director of External Relations:
“IMF Managing Director Strauss-Kahn was arrested in New York City. Mr. Strauss-Kahn has retained legal counsel, and the IMF has no comment on the case; all inquiries will be referred to his personal lawyer and to the local authorities. The IMF remains fully functioning and operational.”
Strauss-Kahn’s lawyer said he would plead not guilty. His wife, Anne Sinclair, a French television journalist also supported his ‘innocence.”
Police Report Alleged Facts:
The alleged sexual assault took place against a 32-year-old hotel maid who had arrived to clean his $2,500+ an evening suite at Sofitel near Times Square Saturday afternoon. The alleged victim stated to police apparently that
"he (Strauss Kahn) came out of the bathroom naked, ran down a hallway to ... where she was, pulled her into a bedroom and began to sexually assault her, She pulled away from him and he dragged her down a hallway into the bathroom, where he engaged in a criminal sexual act, according to her account to detectives. He tried to lock her in the hotel room. It looked like he got out of there in a hurry (According to the Police Spokesperson Paul Browne, he had left behind his mobile phone and other personal items in his haste),
Officers responded to a 911 call from a colleague of the maid, who was treated in hospital for "minor injuries." "We learned quickly he had boarded a flight for Paris," .Plainclothes detectives boarded the plane at about 4.40pm and apprehended Mr Strauss-Kahn in First Class.
Apparent History of Political Activism & as the “Great Seducer”
Mr. Strauss-Kahn had already once tried to gain his Party’s Presidential nomination in 2007. He was expected to seek his party's nomination in 2012 but complained Mr Sarkozy had begun a "smear campaign" against him.
Labeled "The Great Seducer" by the French media, Mr. Strauss-Kahn has been criticized for his behavior towards women.
The Telegraph newspaper cited these previous incidents; Tristane Banon, a French writer, has she fended him off with kicks and punches during an alleged encounter, while an anonymous author last year claimed: "He has trouble controlling himself."
Apparently Strauss-Kahn had a meeting scheduled with another woman for yesterday – German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
