At first glance, you could mistake new song Indiawaale from Happy New Year for Gori Gori from Main Hoon Na. Both, featuring a dinner-jacketed and bow-tied Shah Rukh Khan, are directed by Farah Khan and co-star a heroine in abbreviated costumes. In this glitzier version, a midriff-displaying Deepika Padukone replaces a midriff-displaying Sushmita Sen who starred in the previous movie.
Like Gori Gori’s supporting cast of Amrita Rao, Zayed Khan, Suneil Shetty, Bindu and Sajid Khan, Indiawaale features Abhishek Bachchan – so turbanned, sunglassed and otherwise disguised that you have to look twice to make sure – and Sonu Sood.
Boman Irani completes the Gori Gori hangover, looking much the same in Indiawaale as he did in the 2004 song.
Everyone’s dancing, as they do. Except that here, this motley crew seem to be performing at a concert of sorts. And everything is blue instead of red.
Happy New Year, a heist film starring a bunch of ‘losers,’ is a filmy reunion of frequent collaborators. It is Shah Rukh Khan’s third film with Farah Khan as director, after Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om (2007). Deepika Padukone, who debuted in Om Shanti Om, also starred opposite SRK in last year’s blockbuster Chennai Express. Boman Irani has been directed by Farah in Main Hoon Na and has co-starred with her in 2012′s Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi. He and SRK have also appeared together in films like the Don series. Abhishek Bachchan has co-starred with SRK in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), with Deepika in Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (2010) and with Boman Irani in 2008′s Dostana.
