Hey guys, Sorry for not keeping you up to date with the progress of our new short film ‘Fly in a box’
Since the last blog we have in fact shot the film, which took place on Tuesday, the 3rd of July.
Nothing much to say about the shoot…. Like any other shoot really... Thinking its only going to take you a few hours, not having any actors or location changes, but no! 7 hours later, still shooting.
Plus getting light at 4.30am doesn’t help, which meant the rising sun called our wrap time for us! But still, we got everything we needed and more, which is great only having myself, Chris and Sorcha on set.
Below are a few stills of the footage we shot on the night.
Kit used on this shoot was a few LED panel lights, a glide track, and a suction mount for a Cannon 5D, which was all rented from different kit hire stores in and around London.
Our producer, Sorcha Anglim managed to get all this kit for less then half price, as most kit hire stores will give you discount if you collect and drop off the kit yourselves.
Plus knowing it was for a short film, they can be quite considerate with the price if your nice enough.
The rest of the kit, such as, a tripod, lens and the camera, came from friends and what we had ourselves. All in all, the budget for all the kit, plus petrol there and back came to about £150, which was great to say what we got out of it.
Things to take away from this shoot:
Allow time to pick up extra shots you never planed on. You always see a shot that you didn’t see when you were planning, which can sometimes really aid your film.
For us it was how we could use the flickering LED lights to emphasise what the fly was saying at the time. So when he was mad we flickered the light faster! Stuff like that.
Never assume it will work. Test what you can! For us it was mounting a suction mount to the top of the phone box. This didn’t work... Bugger!
Since the shoot Chris has started compositing our fly for in a test shot, which you can see below. Not much to look at, but a good idea of what it’s going to look like.
As for me, I've got a rough edit down for Chris to work on and for our sound designer to work with.
It’s hard to get a tight edit down when our character (the fly) is yet to be put in. Not knowing the timings of the fly’s movements make it hard to cut from shot to shot. Which will be done at a later date.
Things in the pipeline – Cast voice actors, work on grade and work with sound design, as all this film will be foley after not having any sound equipment on shoot. Keep you posted on voice actors and the grade once we tackle that part.
