Silent Night - The Conclusion
Not blogged in a long while but thought I would update my conclusion to my short drama "Silent Night".
It was a tough one for me, knowing the topic was personal was something that pushed me to try and make it the best it could be. I wasn't 100% happy with the outcome but I suppose what filmmaker is?
There's always something you wish you could change or that you could re-do and thats essentially how we learn as filmmakers. Starting at university I thought I knew how to make a film, coming into it, I didn't have the first clue. One year at University and not having full control of my own film I felt there was much more to learn and silent night allowed me to make the mistakes I was waiting for, so that I could grow as a filmmaker realise potential in my ideas and to overthink possible outcomes.
Silent Night was going well, the shoot was fine and everything went to plan. Looking back on the process, I wish I double checked the footage after shooting instead of at the end of the day. Realising there was nothing too my flashbacks, I wanted to add more, add another element too them. But it was too late, I had a one day shoot and I couldn't of asked any more from my actors, they were great enough as it was. So i worked with what I had.
The next element was the sound, listening closely it wasn't clean, there was a dog in the background walking around, making a noise with its paws. There was a clicking from the tungsten lights, just on most takes there was something wrong in which I tried to correct but in the end, I started all over again and and tried my hand at foley work.
The editing process went quite swiftly, it took awhile on sound design but I know thats one area in which I have to really focus on, something I took for granted when creating this film. The edit seems smooth, it flows well and although there are a few mistakes in which you can point out if you watch more than once, it was an ok view all the way through.
In conclusion to this I wanted to learn, that was my aim, this film was by no means something to impress people, it was a test for myself to see how much I know and how I can make my films better in the future. Personally I felt it was successful and I got what I wanted from it, if people enjoy it, thats a bonus and I'm glad they like it.
