Sirenia is a gothic metal band, originally from the city of Stavanger, Norway. Founded in 2001, the band currently consists of Morten Veland (growling) Ailyn (vocals), Jonathan Perez (drums) and Jan Erik Soltvedt (guitar).
His musical style has changed significantly over the years, from a symphonic metal to elaborate gothic tone metal. Until 2008, Sirenia characterized by having a different female vocalist on each album, and Veland as the only permanent member.
However, three failed attempts to have a full-time vocalist for the band, finally in 2008 the Spanish singer Ailyn joined the band as an official member, after a long selection process that drew more than 500 applicants. Since then, he has recorded four albums with the Norwegians, something that has meant greater stability and increased international recognition of Sirenia.
Sirenia was formed in early 2001 in Stavanger, Norway Morten Veland (lead singer) walked away from his former band Tristania unilaterally, due to musical disagreements and personal problems. Veland included in this project Kristian Gundersen, a close friend and an eminent musician, who shared his musical inclinations, to participate in the clean male vocals and guitar.
In addition, he joined the French Fabienne Gondamin in the female voice. However, usual (as hereinafter) using additional musicians in recording studios and concerts that are not considered permanent members.
For the position of drummer was not an official one had until 2003, when Veland hired Chilean Jonathan Perez as a touring member. Hans Henrik Varland collaborated on keyboards on the first disc. Special mention is Pete Johansen (The Sins of Thy Beloved, Tristania, Morgul and The Scarr), who also participated in their debut on the violin. Pete is well known in the metalhead means by his playing that instrument, with a very well defined and style.
To them, they were joined by a French opera chorus (the "Sirenian Choir ') and Jan Kenneth Barkved, member of the Elusive band with clean male vocals.
Roland Navratil, Austrian symphonic gothic metal band Edenbridge, worked as a drummer concert sometimes absences before Jonathan Perez, who officially belonged full time to Trail of Tears. Navratil participated itself on the European Tour 2004-2005 and to a lesser extent in 2009.
Finally, the bass was played by Veland himself or by guest musicians in the live shows. None of these partners are credited as permanent members of the band.
With this formation they proceeded to record an album and a promotional tour in festivals in his native Norway.
Morten Veland soon restored communication with napalm and records with producer Terje Refsnes of Sound Suite Studios in Marseille, France. The August 13, 2002, Sirenia released their first official album called At Sixes and Sevens.
This musician is a great lover of classical music, and that influence is clearly reflected in this recording, in the form of baroque keyboards that give many dark atmospheres, violins and opera choruses. His group, at least in his early work, played a mixture of gothic metal (with black and death metal elements) and rock with classical influences.
After he was released At Sixes and Sevens, Sirenia scheduled its first European tour in mid-spring and summer of 2003. However, and before the start of the tour, the singer Fabienne Gondamin left his companions. Gomndamin voiced only in the recording of the first album, because as she lived in France and the other members were and lived in Norway, had to withdraw from the group how difficult it was for him.
After a short hearing mass in their country of origin, they chose Henriette Norwegian Bordvik as a substitute and which made live performances during 2003 and 2004. Once completed, Veland began making a new album. He had been working on new songs since 2002 and spent last summer perfecting.
Furthermore, the economic performance of the tour were not as expected and barely able to cover the costs of travel nearly ten countries across the European continent.
It was at this time that were highlighted a number of problems to be reviewed: the formation was not as strong could be expected and the live show of the band lost credit for being unable to capture faithfully all the orchestration and arrangements of music .
Between September and October 2003, Veland and Gundersen went back to the Sound Suite Studios to record An Elixir for Existence, his second official album. The CD included from the metal at the most atmospheric and calm; also they included epic songs with symphonic arrangements. From a conceptual point of view, this new record did not represent anything different for the group, since it follows the same thematic line.
This musical work (published on August 3, 2004) with the participation of the voice Bordvik Henriette, who joined from the beginning of 2003 and which had a surprisingly similar to his predecessor vocal tone.
With the release of their second album, the results were much more discreet and more efforts to market the band were not as good as could be expected.
This situation (attached to break the band took), made in a period of just two months in October 2004, Sirenia will launch the mini-CD Sirenian Shores.
Jonathan Perez definitely joined Sirenia in 2003 and decided to support unconditionally to his friend Morten, despite having to share occupancy with his other band (Trail of Tears), which was untied completely in late 2006 by monetary problems.
With this material, grouping a long break of more than three years away from recording studios took while replanteaban his musical style, and in turn, sought a new record label in order to achieve greater distribution. The label Nuclear Blast was chosen, with which Veland concurred.
In 2007, Sirenia published his third official album (without Sirenian Shores Mini-CD), called Nine Destinies And A Downfall, with a new vocalist, called Monika Pedersen of Denmark, as Bordvik left the group for personal reasons November 2005.
This album also marked the debut of Bjørnar Landa (from the Norwegian Artifact industrial rock band) on guitar, before the departure of Kristian Gundersen in late 2004, to pursue other own projects. Landa no involvement in the vowels, as did his predecessor.
The style is decidedly commercial and very different from what he had heard of the group in the past. Cooler and less dense musical currents were included. Thus, he lost followers to his usual music, but won as many.
Before the album's release, Sirenia traveled to Serbia and Montenegro and recorded two music videos with Icode Productions team. Along with My Mind's Eye, The Other Side recorded. Both were the first band.
Despite receiving very divided criticism of the quality of Nine Destinies and a Downfall, this album marked the first major international success of Sirenia, in a forceful way. He reached listed in 6 countries, and received much attention from publications worldwide. Meanwhile its simple promotional My Mind 's Eye (taken from the same album), topped the radio charts in several countries. The video was widely distributed in Austria, Switzerland, Australia and Germany, and it was aired on MTV, according to the Norwegian newspaper published Aftenbladet.
However, the November 5, 2007, it was reported on their official website that the new singer left Sirenia musical differences and after a very brief stint. Monika was the third vocalist who left Sirenia (one per album).
With this, the group had suddenly canceled a European tour with the Swedish band Therion. It is speculated that the internal, relations between Pedersen and the rest of the band were never quite good, something that motivated his return to the Danish band that released, Sinphonia.
In the following months the group looked for a new singer and composed for his next album. Finally on April 10, 2008, Sirenia announced their new female vocalist, chosen from over 500 applicants and after an ordeal that lasted two months. The choice was Ailyn (Pilar Jimenez Garcia, May 29, 1982) of Spanish nationality, born in Catalonia, who was not related in any way in the Gothic world, but rather was dedicated to pop music, so the group It has been strongly criticized for their purely commercial claims, although the band itself has stated: "Ailyn fits perfectly into the new songs of Sirenia, so we are thrilled to have her." Ailyn was part of a musical group that was dedicated to Spanish versioning issues Japanese anime series and video games. He also participated in the Spanish edition of X Factor Cuatroº channel in 2007.
The May 19, 2008 Bjørnar Landa left to spend more time with his family (after being nearly four years as a member and prior to a recording session) and was replaced by Michael S. Krumins, a prominent guitarist from the band Norwegian progressive rock band Green Carnation.
June 12 Sirenia Kristian Olav Torp introduced as the bassist, who act solely in their live shows.
The 13th Floor, was published on January 23, 2009, following a very similar to his previous album style, although most innovative, to include some longer and dense themes, returning in some parts the sound that gave it birth, but not achieve the same complexity and elaboration.
In July 2009 he was released the name of a new draft Veland, called Mortemia, which will work without neglecting the increasingly away from its beginnings Sirenia, following a line in the style of his work on albums like Beyond the Veil Tristania, or At Sixes and Sevens Sirenia.
In October 2009, Jan K. Barkved, Sirenia great collaborator, was found dead at 35 years old in his apartment in Stavanger, under circumstances not widespread. His main band, Elusive, had been disbanded since April.
The entrance of vocalist Ailyn was a great stability in the band, which seems to motivate her to continue with the Norwegians, the first in nearly ten years that repeated recording a second album.
As of July 8, 2010 Sirenia focused on writing and recording demos of songs from her fifth album, which was released in Europe on 21 January 2011. According to reports the October 11, 2010, its name is The Enigma of Life, which is characterized by a more alternative sound and softened.
The April 19, 2011, Michael S. Krumins Sirenia left to devote more time to their own bands and personal projects.
