As a kid growing up in the island of St. Lucia my desire was always to travel to a big country in order to become the person I wanted to be. Now that I have done so, I fully understand the true meaning of the words: “the grass is greener on the other side”. Having lived in the US, graduated from one of the major State Universities, worked in corporate America for years and for the past ten working for the government (the judiciary branch) dealing with family issues namely separation and divorce, domestic violence, drug abuse and addiction, juvenile delinquency just to name a few, I now realize that the grass is actually not greener on the other side. I have seen those who have a lot in life, the money, the lifestyle, the fancy house and cars, dream careers and on the flip side I have seen those that are struggling to make ends meet; basically, I have seen it all, and sadly every single one of them both rich and poor, have been caught up in the system one way or another with no way out. So when I look back and reflect on what I had to go through, the many sacrifices I had to make, I have gained more appreciation and admiration for my country and can genuinely say in all honesty that the simple things in life, is what life is all about and I will go even further by saying, that the simple things in life are free and in fact is the key to true happiness. Although, it’s true that as St. Lucians we all want the same things as that of many in the western world: a home, a job, and a better life for our children and if provided a chance we often leave our country sometimes leaving behind a more stable life in our native country to become a citizen of another, working tirelessly, relentlessly pursuing an evasive “Western Dream” yet time and time again, after we have travel that road, we soon realize that the very reason why we left our country in search of a better life was actually back home in our beloved country all along. We now have to face and accept the bitter truth that the grass is actually not greener on the other side and that it is all a misconception; a better life in another country does not come easier and for that to be accomplished it requires many sacrifices. We often complain about eating green bananas, breadfruit and chicken backs…etc. But the truth is we are still eating the same things abroad in fact we pay more for it and many of us are not free.
To change the above mindset, Social Entrepreneurship is the immediate solution to envision. Social entrepreneurship is the process of pursuing suitable solutions to social problems. More specifically, social entrepreneurs adopt a mission to create and sustain social value. They pursue opportunities to serve this mission, while continuously adapting and learning (wikipedia.org). In essence, social entrepreneurs see economic value where others see heaps of nothing. And they see business opportunities where others see only dead ends. The Examer Company Limited hopes to spark in our youths the desire to discover values within their reach while they are still in school; to help youths understand why they need to stay in their country rather than long to be in someone else’s and for them to strive to make their grass greener right there at home by watering it with hard work and diligent efforts and they will indeed find a measure of happiness and contentment with the simple things in life. As Wall Street Journal Review of June 15-16, 2013 says that People are at their most innovative when they work within the constraints of what they already know. We at the Examer Company Limited are determined to enlighten and empower our youths now, by helping them to love and take pride in their own environment, their beloved country of Saint Lucia. To get us started The Examer Company Limited has opened an avenue for them to explore and expand their horizon and that is through social entrepreneurship, enabling them to defeat that false hope or false propaganda of the Western world that they can only live life to the full by traveling to another country instead of striving to do so in their own. The Examer Company Ltd is geared towards changing that engrained perception that has plagued us for many decades. Please join the conversation and together we can make a difference.
