Surfing is awesome!

Being born in upstate New York, I never really had the opportunity to do much surfing. Besides, I was always busy trying to find time between wrestling practices to get as many turns in snowboarding as possible. To me surfing was just something that all the long-haired hippy-kids from California did anyways; it wasn’t a real sport that should interest me like snowboarding did. Maybe it would be fun to try sometime on vacation, I mean how hard could it be anyways? Holy crap was I wrong!
About 4 years ago I started noticing all of my older snowboarding buddies telling me how awesome surfing was, how it was a muscle sport and didn’t hurt your joints and bones (four years later and now all of my joints and previous injuries ache whenever I go snowboarding and try to ride hard). Well now I have tried surfing and let me tell you; 1) it is hard, and 2) I could totally see myself getting into this sport big time.
Visiting a cousin of mine just north of San Diego in the PB area, I rented a large foam surfboard from a beach stand determined to ride some waves and hang ten, or whatever surfers due. Armed with hope and what I though was transferable snowboarding skills, I crashed into the water with reckless abandon. After about two hours of frustration I finally caught a good wave, stood up, didn’t fall and realized, holy cow, I was surfing! I caught maybe one or two more waves that session, and loved every minute of it.
Unfortunately I was out on the left coast for just a few days attending a career fair, so I was not able to get more water time in, but I can’t wait for the next time.
