Surviving Snow & Police Crackdown on Occupy Wall Street –Pass it On!
Posted on at
Is it coincidence as cold weather is about to hit that City decides to take away Occupy Wall Street generators on pretext of fire hazard? Two weeks earlier preceding another cold tide, they tried to deny them access to sleeping bags after making tents illegal. Occupy Wall Street may have captured many people's imagination, but do not be lulled into false perspective that this movement has many friends in high places. Crackdowns on other Occupy Wall Street protests are underway, (PHOTO from Oakland, California police crackdown), and little has been said in the White House, Congress or most City Halls. Strategically Timing Crackdowns with Weather & Disinterest to Break Protesters: New York though is the impetus as well as starting point. Without New York’s Occupy Wall Street, the movement would lose its symbolic hold. NYPD understood that a previous direct crackdown had a negative effect by further driving visibility and sense of solidarity with the protesters. Consequently, the effort to break down Occupy Wall Street in NYC will be now executed in what they believe will be more clever – let weather, disinterest, and strategically timed crackdowns wear down the protesters. (Top PHOTO from NYC Protesters – October 29, 2011). We share the below view of Bill Lipton and the Workers People Party (regardless of whether we also have similar political views) on 1st Amendment rights and the Occupy Wall Street Protester's ability as well as theoretical right to exercise it. It is not enough to say that a 1st Amendment right exists in America and wave that as a blank check in preaching to the rest of the globe. US authorities also must allow the exercise of the right of protest, expression, and speech in a non-violent fashion. Inconvenience to others is generally a poor counter-argument. Occupy Wall Street does not have protesters' resources to buy a "NY Times" advertisement or on Bloomberg Television. They do not have access to prompt a set and sustained "Wall Street Journal" editorial or pay for neon signs on Broadway. Part of the protest and empowerment is that it can be done by sheer numbers and stubborn resistance to weather and efforts to catalog it into just another political message. For the above reasons, we will employ our outlet to forward the below message and encourage you to also do the same, Ambassador Muhamed Sacirbey Facebook – “Diplomatically Incorrect” Tweeter - DiplomaticallyX ---It just started snowing in New York City -- and on the Occupy Wall Street protest out at Zuccotti Park. ---Yesterday, the fire department removed the protesters' generators to prevent fire hazards. But it's cold out there. For the protest to go on, they need adequate shelter and warmth and they need it now. ---Mayor Bloomberg has a duty to protect the First Amendment rights of the protesters to peacefully assemble and raise their voices. Sign our emergency petition to Mayor Bloomberg to make it clear he'll work with the protesters to allow them what they need -- tents, shelter, warmth -- to continue making their voices heard from Zuccotti Park. action.workingfamiliesparty.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=4853 ---14,000 people have signed already. But it will take a lot more than that to get Mayor Bloomberg to pay attention. After you sign, please spread the word by asking five friends to sign too. If you support the message of the Occupy Wall Street protests -- or even just their right to be there -- now is the moment to take action and spread the word. Thanks for keeping up the momentum.
