Syria-Of Things to Come? By Ambassador mo

An unusually broad range of UN member states co-sponsored and voted in favor of a resolution in the UN General Assemblies Human Rights Third Committee condemning Syria on continued violence against pro-democracy demonstrators and called for the government to end “without delay” all human rights violations. The resolution was adopted by 122 votes for, 13 against and 41 abstentions. Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Britain, Colombia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait were all cosponsors. A Broad Core Coming Together to Confront/Pressure Assad Regime: The resolution was adopted on November 22, 2011, a day before more pressure is expected from the Arab League. As critically, several critical factors in the region are coming to coordinate pressure on the Assad regime. Saudi Arabia has raised sanctions and diplomatic pressure. Jordan’s King has recommended that Bashar Assad should step-down and out. The EU and US are racheting up sanctions even as Russia and China stand in the way. Most critically, Turkey which shares a long border is considering options from cutting-off electric supplies to establishing enclaves or safe areas within Syria for fleeing refugees. (That would be a step from openly supporting insurgency and probably ignite a military confrontation with Assad’s security forces). Finally, the Syrian opposition is organizing itself politically and deserters from Syria’s military ranks could soon present a meaningful threat with some outside support. A few countries are starting to move to recognize the opposition as the legitimate government. Some have warned that Bashar Assad could end up like Libya's Colonel Gaddafi. Unlike only a few months earlier, the international and Syrian opposition to and pressure upon the Syrian regime is ever more undertaking coordinated action. Syrian authorities have refused to allow access to the independent international Commission mandated by the UN Human Rights Council and failed to implement the Arab League’s Plan of Action. Syria’s UN Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari, said, “it’s no secret that the United States was the main insightful party.” Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor who voted in favor of the resolution, stressed that the human rights violations carried out daily in Syria posed a serious threat to peace and security within that country and throughout the region. Egypt voted in favor and it’s UN Ambassador Maged Abdelfattah Abdelaziz said that the draft resolution supported the Syrian people for fundamental reforms that would “enable them to live in freedom, dignity and democracy, achieve better respect for the rule of law, human rights and their fundamental freedom.” By Ambassador Muhamed Sacirbey Facebook – Become Fan at “Diplomatically Incorrect” Twitter – Follow us at DiplomaticallyX Related Reports at diplomaticallyincorrect.org/c/war-crimes-justice
