Syria: Turkey & Arab League Pressure, by Ambassador mo
Posted on at
President Gul has stated that Turkey has “lost all confidence” in the Assad regime. The Arab League has tried to bring its diverse membership together under new General Secretary Nabil Elaraby to toughen its position on the Syrian regime. Neither is having any apparent immediate impact on the regime. However, this may evolve into a longer-term consensus.
This is likely to evolve into a battle of attrition, as we have indicated several months earlier. The Assad regime in Syria and the opposition understand that it is an all or nothing encounter now. It will be very difficult, if not impossible to find any compromise. The results of the now apparent successful overthrow of Gaddafi in Libya have only cemented the stance of the parties in Syria. That is also the nature of revolution, an overthrow of a system that by definition concerns itself most with retaining its control.
Thus Turkey’s and the Arab League’s measures are not decisive or even necessarily significant in and of themselves. However, they do chart out a course and alliances that will be ever more defining as the battle for Syria’s future evolves.
