In Thallinn next to a bastion hill, at once after a tower under the name Thick Margaret, in a few minutes from passenger port a symbolical memorial is situated the "Interrupted line". A monument is a double construction heavy and gloomy : one black pipe stretches from a hill, other from earth, but to each other they do not reach and torn off on a middle.
Exactly it and symbolizes the interrupted way. A memorial is sanctified to the greatest tragedy of Estonia - shipwreck of passenger ferry in the gulf of Finland near an island Утое, 852 men, habitants of Sweden, Estonia and Finland, perished as a result of that. It happened in a peace-time, in September, 1994, when a ship "Estonia" was directed from Thallinn to Stockholm. Reasons of catastrophe until now are to the end obscure. In night on Septembers, 24 a nasal gate swung open unexpectedly, and a freight deck in the counted minutes appeared flooded by water.
All half a hour passed from the moment of catastrophe, therefore pulling through succeeded to not many. What could reason of tragedy be in? One hour and a half prior to a catastrophe the ferry of "Estonia" intersected with the ferry of "Mariella", the members of crew of that asserted afterwards, that speed of "Estonia" had been exceeded. Soon after it the ferry of "Mariella" got the signal of SOS, what more than one hundred persons were saved due to. After investigation of reasons of destruction of ferry of "Estonia" an official commission pulled out supposition, that a catastrophe happened from bad weather terms and imperfections of construction of ship.
Fate of wrecked and the sunken ferry decided the government of three states : to Estonia, Sweden, Finland. Native lost laboured for raising of ferry and bodies, however the heads of countries counted up such decision inefficient, therefore the sunken ship became a brotherly grave for lost. Two years ago, in 1996, opening of monument took place the "Interrupted line", the authors of that it is been Jorma Mukala and Villu Jaanissoo.
On intention of architects, a memorial must symbolize the way interrupted in the middle, in fact just the same distance the ferry of "Estonia" had time to do to the death - exactly half. On one of constructions from black granite the names of all lost in a catastrophe are carved, on other is a date of this terrible tragedy. Next to a monument a white cross is set. Now the ferry of "Estonia" lies on the day of the Baltic sea on a depth 60 meters, immersion to him is strictly forbidden.
