The deadliest disaster to strike the annual Muslim pilgrimage at Mecca in a quarter-century.

Like any other year, this year too millions of Muslims flocked to Mecca in Saudi Arabia on the holy occasion of the religious pilgrimage of hajj. But on Thursday morning a tragic incident of stampede made the whole festive mood a scenario of panic and sadness when at least 717 people died there and another 805 were injured in the terrible incident. It is reported that a sudden increase and overlapping in the density of pilgrims converging on each other from different directions at the Jamarat Bridge, a five-storey structure in Mina where pilgrims ritually stone the devil triggered a stamped, resulting in death and injury of so many pilgrims. The kingdom's leaders have ordered an inquiry into the disaster.
