On 29th September 1952, John Cobb died.
Cobb was a British racing driver who set the land speed record at Bonneville Speedway in the United States in 1938, 1939 and later beet his own record in 1947, which remained until 1964 when it was beaten by Donald Campbell.
In 1952 he attempted to break the water speed record at Loch Ness in Scotland. The boat hit an unexplained wake (claimed by some to have been caused by the Loch Ness Monster) at speeds in excess of 200 mph, destroying the boat and killing him.
During the same period that Cobb was racing, the Campbells, father and son, were frequently setting the land and water speed records.
