On 28th September 1978, Pope John Paul I was found dead in bed in the Vatican.
The Pope had been elected on 26th August 1978, a mere 33 days earlier. This is not the shortest reign for a pope, but it is the eleventh shortest. It is the shortest in well over 300 years.
John Paul I, when he died, was just under 66 years old, which is pretty young for a modern pope to die.
Various claims that certain facts were altered about the discovery of his body, and the fact that he died so soon into his papacy and at a comparatively young age, have led to more than a few conspiracy theories about his death.
