The Door

I've been working in the New York City night club scene for most of my adult life. Approaching a crowded club door can still be intimidating. Some of all the toughest clubs to gain access are in the Meatpacking District. These hot spots such as the Boom Boom Room at the Standard Hotel, Tenjune, 1 Oak and Avenue are guarded by big, brawley bouncers at the doors and are closed off by velvet ropes.

The huge crowds of people attempting to get in the clubs surround the entrance and the long lines of people spread down the street. Nightclubs like this are almost impossible to gain access to unless you are a "A" list actor, professional athlete, well-known model or a hot-shot Wall Street player.

Here are a few tips that might help you gain access to these popular New York City nightclubs:

Dress for success and according to where you which club you want to attend. The owners and promoters of these nightclubs want to create the best atmosphere for the people that attend. Some experts say you should dress approprietly for the neighborhood. For example:

1) The Lower East Side prefers natural fabrics and skinny denim.

2) The East Village is more of a rock and roll with some punk rock.

3) In the Meatpacking District you should wear a party dress with five-inch Christian Loubatin heels and a Chanel handbag.

A few other ideas to gain access into the nightclubs:

1)Call ahead and make a reservation. You must realize this may lead to ordering bottle service when making the reservation or when you arrive at the club.

2)Be prepared to spend money; a night at the clubs can cost you upwards of one thousand dollars. Make sure you carry cash for tipping.

3) Be polite and friendly with the promoter at the door. You might consider tipping the bouncer. This does not gurantee entrance at the higher end nightclubs.

Good luck and drink responsibly!
