On January 16th 1920 the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution went into effect, the start of Prohibition.
This amendment banned the sale, production and transport of alcohol, although the federal law did ban its consumption. How you could consume it without being able to buy or make it is another matter.
The amendment had actually been passed some time prior to it going into effect.
During Prohibition, there was a significant rise in related crime, as criminals sought to make money from the now-illicit substance.
The Eighteenth Amendment was finally repealed in its entirety - the only one of the 27 current amendments for which that is the case.
