The first pope that visits the Philippines is Pope Paul Vl, after the typhoon that hits Tondo, Manila on Nov. 1970
Just like Pope Francis, Pope Paul VI visited the country afte typhoon Yoling devastated the Philippines. During his visit, the pope spent his time on the slums of Tondo and ministering the residents. He also spend time in a shack talking to a local family with 10 children.
When her arrived in Manila, Bolivian painter, Benjamin Mendoza, pretended to be a priest swung a knife to the late pope but the attack was stopped by the Pres Ferdinand Marcos, using his skill in karate he thwarted the attacked. Though the pope was still wounded he didn't disclose his injury but rather continue his trip in the Philippines
