On November 18th 1991, the Briton Terry Waite and the American Thomas Sutherland were released.
Both had been held hostage by members of the Islamic Jihad. Sutherland was the Dean of Agriculture at the American University of Beirut and was held hostage for 2,353 days and Waite for 1,763 days.
Terry Waite was the Special Envoy for the Archbishop of Canterbury, and had been negotiating for the release of hostages being held by Islamic Jihad. Waite had in the past successfully negotiated the release of other hostages, but on this occasion he was himself taken captive on 20th January 1987.
