Just this morning it was announced that the Sacramento Kings will be the first pro sports team to accept BitCoin within their organization. This announcement comes only weeks after Overstock.com confirmed its acceptance of the global currency on their website and just days after Ebay UK declared it would view BitCoin as a payment method come February 10th.
From WIRED,
The Kings will accept bitcoins through an online service provided by Atlanta, Georgia-based startup BitPay. A BitPay spokesperson tells us that the service is now used by about 20,000 merchants, with about 1,000 signing up each week. In addition to the Kings, this includes the online blogging service WordPress and internet gaming outfit Zynga.
Where most people who're familiar with BitCoin are going to encourage its usage it is still unclear what the Sacramento Kings actually mean when they say they'll be accepting BitCoin. I assume this means within their e-commerce and their ticket sales, but nothing has been clarified as of now.
Though they aren't doing particularly well this season this action is not to go unnoticed. The professional sports industry has no taken the leap into BitCoin and all of Sacramento is involved. If that avid Kings fan didn't know what BitCoin was before they most certainly will after the press blitz the Kings have generated.
Other events will most likely follow in accepting BitCoin. Imagine if a Ticketmaster or Stubhub joined the fray for the crypto-currency what it would do for ticket sales? Who do you think will be the next adopter?
