On January 25th 1924 the first Winter Olympics, known as I Olympic Winter Games, started.
This was the same year as the Summer Olympics and, until 1992, the Winter and Summer Olympic Games would be held on the same year. Following that, they would be held two years apart.
The first games were held in France at Haute-Savoie and Mont Blanc. Sixteen nations competed in the first games, with Norway winning the most medals, the most bronze and silver medals, and joint first with Finland the most gold medals.
Prior to 2014, this was Great Britain's best performance in any Winter Olympics.
