THE SUMMER FRUIT, WATERMELON

Watermelon is perfect fruit to have in the summer since it is juicy, cool and refreshing. However there is more to watermelon than just the taste. This fruit is a nutritional package that can affect the health in numerous positive ways.

 

Watermelon is a great source of vitamin A, C, B6 and B1. This fruit also contain potassium, magnesium, carotenoid antioxidant and lycopene. Every 100 grams of watermelon contian 30 calories, 0 fat, 1 mg sodium, 8 g carbohydrates, 1 g protein, 10 g sugar and also contain niacin, thiamine, B6, B12 and acid Pantothenic. Watermelon is rich in minerals such as iron, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, fluoride and selenium. Read on to find out the various health benefits of watermelon.

It keeps your body hydrated

Watermelons are largely available in the market during summers. Watermelon has 92 percent of water and electrolytes. In the summer, due to sweating your body loses water and minerals; and watermelons keep your body and skin hydrated, thus reducing the chances of dehydration.

One of the best nutritional benefits of watermelon is that it is a good for the heart. As we know potassium is present in the body cell and fluid; and it has the ability to maintain the heart rate and blood pressure. A watermelon contains a good amount of potassium which helps in curing heart disease and keeping the heart healthy.

Keeps cancer at bay

Watermelon is full of lycopene. Various studies have proven that lycopene helps in lowering the risk of many types of cancer, including lung, prostate and even breast cancer.

Improves Vision

Watermelon is a wonderful source of beta-carotene (that rich red hue of watermelon). It helps produce the pigments in the retina of eye and protects against age related macular degeneration and also prevents nigh blindness.

Helps in weight loss

The citrulline in watermelon reduces the accumulation of fat in our fat cells. Citruline in an amino acid which converts into arginine with help from the kidneys. Citrulline, when consumed, has the ability oto block the activity of TNAP ( tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphate) which makes our fat cells create less fat, and thus helps prevent over-accumulation of body fat.

As watermelon contains vitamin B6, B1, C and manganese, it gives a kind of protection shield against various outer infections.

Watermelon is also helpful in reducing inflammation that leads to asthama, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer and arthritis. It cleans the kidney and clears waste from the blood and counters inflammatory diseases that lead to arthritis and skin rashes.

The intake of watermelon can help in cleansing the kidneys and bladder. It reduces the concentration of uric acid in the blood and also lowers the chance of forming kidney stones. If you are suffering from urine infection, watermelons are helpful in decreasing the germs in the bladder.
