The Weddine of Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary

Posted on at

On November 20th 1947, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, heir presumptive to the British throne, and Prince Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, were married.

The pair had first met back in 1939, when Princess Elizabeth was thirteen, and started to exchange letters. In 1946, Philip, after serving in the Royal Navy in World War II, asked King George VI for his daughter's hand in marriage, and the pair became secretly engaged.

They were married at 11:30 GMT in Westminster Abbey. A number of family members on both sides were not invited to attend, due to the recent war.
