In Toronto, Tesfaye met producer Jeremy Rose, who had an idea for a musical project called dark R & B "The Weeknd". After trying to launch the idea of musician Curtis Santiago, Rose made one of his instrumentals to Tesfaye, who put a freestyle on the song, and began working on an album. He produced three songs "What You Need", "Loft Music" and "The Morning" and others Tesfaye rapped that Rose has finally discarded. Rose let Tesfaye keep the tracks were produced under the condition that, ultimately, would be credited to them. However, in December 2010, Tesfaye rose "What You Need", "Loft Music" and "The Morning" on YouTube under the name "I Weeknd" although his identity was initially unknown. The songs drew attention online through word of mouth, which includes a blog with the songs published by Canadian rapper Drake, who also helped generate interest in The Weeknd. He later received coverage in outlets like Pitchfork Media and The New York Times.

The R & B singer of 25 years was arrested in January in Las Vegas hotel Cromwell, when police intervened to break up a fight and was hit Weeknd. This legal problem coincides with a time when The Weeknd is beginning to set as a major star thanks to his album "Beauty Behind the Madness," which spent three weeks at number one in sales in the United States.
