The Wild Side of Filmmaking

Posted on at

Today I was informed that one of my favourite musicians, Lou Reed had passed away. His music had a precious impact on my life and I can still recall sitting in that cafe down in Hinckley pondering some big questions about my life and where I'm heading. I was still at that stage in my life, as I'm sure many were at the age of 15, thinking what it was I wanted. What kind of person was it I wanted to be?

During the summer of 2009 I decided to apply for a film school by the name of The British Youth Film Academy just because it's something different and who knows, I might actually enjoy it; and enjoy I did.

I'm not quite sure what it was but I can still remember the feeling I felt when I first started to put together a film. From planning out all the shots to directing the actors, something about it just clicked. It was the praise from the mentors about my ability to think creatively about how to put a shot together that boosted my confidence even more. They still couldn't believe this was my first time. Everything began to fall into place.

It was at that very moment that Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side' came on in the background quietly whilst I was sat there with my friends. I think it might have been coming from the kitchen but I'm not sure; I asked my friend sitting next to me what it was and he told me and ever since then I related that very song to the discovery of who I wanted to be as a person. It felt much clearer, I wanted to make films. Pure and simple.
