Demeteriya Nabire, wife of Mubarak Batambuze, who went to fetch water from a lake nearby was dragged and killed by a crocodile. This incident took place in Lake Kyoga, a fresh water lake in Uganda. Nabire was dragged by a huge crocodile and was never found. This left Batambuze broken and shattered. He lost his wife who was pregnant for 6 months.
Batambuze wanted to avenge his family, killing the monster that killed his wife and was really a threat to the villagers. In spite of warnings from the villagers, Batambuze along with few of his friends arrived at the bank of the lake to kill the beast.
But it was all in vain, the old spear, stones and sticks were not sufficient to bring the goliath down. A vengeful Batambuze visited the local goldsmith for a better weapon and he delivered.
Though the price was immense, it was no more than the lives sacrificed and it would ultimately bring peace to Batambuze’s soul and relief to the village.
After the first deadly encounter Batambuze returned more determined than ever, better equipped than before.
Upon reaching the lakeside, he set his sight on the beast that had taken innumerable lives. Finally David was facing goliath. For more than an hour Batambuze battled the beast. Finally he emerged victorious. He had slain the predator. The hunter was finally hunted.
“There was so much shock. What really surprised everybody was how big the beast was. It wasn’t an ordinary crocodile. It was so big. And people called me and my friends heroes,” said the victor.
And so the hero’s tale spread to each and every corner of the country. His courage and determination in the face of the most deadly predator of all astound everyone.
The crocodilian was astonishingly 4 meters long and weighed 600kg as confirmed by Ugandan Wildlife Authority.
“Within myself I’m a very depressed man because I lost a wife and an unborn child. But the locals keep on saying, ‘Thank you for killing the beast, that’s where we fetch water and we’re sure it would have taken somebody else. Thank you so much, you did a great thing for us. So I’m a local hero, people keep on thanking me”, said an aggrieved Batambuze.
Mubarak Batambuze, the hero of Lake Kyoga, displayed real courage. He did not kill an endangered animal but only a monster, the source of fear for all who survived by the banks of Lake Kyoga.
