In the last week or 2 I have blogged about making my own little film, which was observing Amy painting an awesome painting! And the process of creating a film about it.
I am pleased to say that that film is almost finished! I started with a rough cut, which lacked pace, structure and for these reasons, entertainment value.
I stripped the whole thing back, and wouldn't let myself be afraid to begin again from scratch- re watching my rushes, picking out more that I thought might now work, and deleting anything from my timeline that I may have liked, but just didn't work.
I also set myself the task of not staying on any shot longer than was interesting. If there was an action in a shot, I opened the shot just before, and cut almost straight away afterwards, to keep it snappy and moving, which is what I thought this film needed.
I also tried to move the film forward with the music. Once picking my music (This will destroy you... I love that band for film music) I sectioned it off (from Jack's advice) and tried to change the pace and editing with every section..!
I have learnt a lot though. I didn't think enough while filming, simply shooting what I saw, and not thinking about the edit enough, or what I wanted to do with it. If I was to go back I would do a lot more with the reveal at the beginning, starting off very abstract and wondering what is going on, before showing Amy and whats going on.
I also would have liked to have shot it nicer, and thought more about different shots and much nicer wides... even manipulating the setting a little more- even though its not a drama, set design is something I would have actually liked to consider... can't fix everything in the edit!
Also in future, I want to think about what story I'm telling. Is it the process? The enjoyment of it? The struggle? All these are things I want to consider in the future.
The film is exporting as we speak! So stay tuned.... 'Timless' will be here shortly!
