Mohammed Rafi who was born on 24th December 1924 was an Indian playback singer, especially for Hindi films. Rafi was notable for his versatility; his songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans. Between 1950 and 1970, Rafi was the most sought after singer in the Hindi film industry. Though Rafi was primarily noted for his songs in Hindi, he had sung in other Indian languages like Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati and even in some foreign languages. He was born in a village of British Punjab. But Rafi's father moved to Lahore in 1935 and in 1944, Rafi moved to Bombay. Soon his playback singing journey in Hindi films started. Rafi had worked with all the contemporary music directors of his time. In early 1970s, Rafi's musical output decreased due to the increased popularity of Kishore Kumar after his hit-songs in the super-duper box office hit film, Aradhana. Mohammed Rafi died at 10:25 PM on 31 July 1980, following a massive heart attack. The last song he recorded was for the movie Aas Paas.
