Is there a cushier spot to ride out a blast? Don’t be fooled by the gourmet options and ocean rooms with jetted bathtubs. Vancouver Island’s wet, western coast is treacherous. Known as “the graveyard of the Pacific,” it’s sunk many a ship. Ferocious waves roll in from Japan and wallop the sands of Long Beach, known for its old-growth cedar. Drive 26 miles south to tiny Ucluelet. Follow the Wild Pacific Trail, where legend says giant waves can splash over Amphitrite Lighthouse. Pacific Rim National Park is a regional must-see, too.
