Groups of animals, or people that can be moved in a direction... are called a "herd". This can be done, because as individuals, they are not smart enough, or cannot think about.... how to escape. As long as they are fed, have companionship and what passes for "entertainmant"...can be "herded"...as it were, even, to their doom.
