High-fat, high-sugar foods not only causes obesity and promote heart disease, but may also contribute to conditions such as osteoporosis by bone weakening, according to researchers. If this trend continues, this overlooked "silent thief" begin to paralyze large number of baby boomers at risk, said researchers from the University of Michigan and the Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute. While this high-fat, high-sugar diet trend and the subsequent risk of osteoporosis are rising alarmingly fast, no hope, said Ron Zernicke, dean of the School of Kinesiology, UM professor of orthopedic surgery and engineering biomedical.

The medical community and the public can reverse this trend to tackle the problem head on and immediately, through diet, exercise and, in some cases, medication. Today, about a quarter of two to five years in the United States and a third of school-age children, including adolescents are obese or overweight. "Yes-the oldest Boomers now 66 have reached the stage in life when they are most susceptible to bone and joint disorders," Zernicke said. Consider these alarming statistics: general forecasts US surgeon in 2020, half of Americans age 50 develop or be at risk for osteoporosis of the hip. This is particularly bad news for women who develop osteoporosis in two to three times the rate of men.

"One in three women will suffer a hip fracture due to osteoporosis by age 85, and about 20 percent die within a year of the fracture. At this time, approximately 12 million Americans age 50 have osteoporosis, "said Cy Frank, executive director of the Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute and an orthopedic surgeon practicing in Calgary. Sugar and fat bones are weakened in two ways. First, diets high in saturated fat and calcium absorption block sugar. Instead, the calcium necessary for healthy bones throughout the body washed in our urine. Secondly, saturated fats tend to form 'soaps' insoluble lining the intestine and can block required bone calcium. Again passes through the body calcium unused. The result? Too much junk food fat layers into a skeleton weakened struggling to handle the extra weight, Zernicke said.

Osteoporosis, the so-called 'silent thief "because no symptoms, steals bone tissue and leaves thousands of small pores in the bones. Porous bones can break with little stress. The treatment of osteoporotic fractures cost about 18 billion dollars a year-on experts predict cost will double by 2025. diet and exercise are primary preventions against osteoporosis, Frank said. a child who grows around puberty sets quickly with new bone. the healthy foods and physical activity to optimize bone growth and accumulation, reducing the likelihood of osteoporotic fractures later in life. again, healthy diet, exercise and medications to slow bone loss, if necessary, can reduce the likelihood osteoporotic fracture. a healthy and balanced diet includes vegetables, fruits and whole grains, and limit saturated fats, salt and sugar. But prevention goes beyond diet and exercise. It is essential to manage the environment that influences food choices. Eliminating junk food from places makers promote healthy life-schools, recreation centers, hospitals also help.
