Toothpaste derived from two words,tooth and paste,tooth for the teeth and paste is a mixture of different ingredients useful for the safety and cleaning of the teeths.Toothpaste is always used with a toothbrush to maintain the health and cleaning of the teeths.It is a  gel dentifrice and is used for promoting oral hygiene.It is abrasive that helps in removing the food particles and dental plaque and  produces the ingredients that prevents the teeth from different diseases.

     Toothpaste is made up of variety of ingredients.Water is the major ingredient (20%-42%) of toothpaste.Other than this,abrasives,fluorides,Surfactants,anti-bacterial agents,flavorants,remineralizers are the some ingredients of the toothpaste.Toothpaste contain 50% of abrasives. Hydroxyapatite (Ca₅(PO₄)₃OH), aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)₃),  silicas and zeolites and calcium hydrogen phosphates are some of the abrasives in toothpaste.

     Flouride is used in toothpaste to prevent the teeths from cavities.Sodium monofluorophosphate (Na₂PO₃F),  Sodium fluoride (NaF),stannous fluoride (SnF₂) and Olaflur are the fluoride ingredients.Not all,but some of the toothpaste contain surfactants which is a foaming agent which improves the cleaning power of the toothpaste.

     Some antibacterial agents are also used in toothpaste which prevents the teeths from gingivitis. Triclosan or zinc chloride is used as the antibacterial agent.Flavourants are also put in toothpaste.The most popular flavourants used in toothpaste are peppermint, spearmint, and wintergreen. Lavender, neem, ginger, vanilla, lemon, orange,  anise, apricot, bubblegum, cinnamon, fennel, peanut butter,iced tea, whisky and pine are the some other flavours of the toothpaste.

     Calcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite nanocrystals are used for the reformation of the enamel.Some miscellaneous components are also used to minimize the tendency of toothpaste to change in powder or dry form.Diethylene glycol is included in toothpaste for sweet tasting.Toothpaste mostly consist of two types,whitening and herbal and natural toothpastes.Overall toothpaste is very useful for the health.
