We’ve entered a new automotive world. Subaru is selling more cars than Volkswagen (in the U.S.), Ford’s next ultra-supercar will be powered by a V6, and the Geneva Motor Show matters. That last item is probably the hardest for me to grasp because, though the Geneva Motor Show has always offered a parade of automotive (and non-automotive…) eye candy, it’s never really mattered from an American point-of-view. Like Vegas, what happened in Geneva stayed in…well, maybe not in Geneva, but certainly in Europe. The globalization of the auto industry over the past 10 years has changed that. Manufacturers are facing shrinking profit margins and need higher volumes to justify new vehicles. That means most modern vehicles have to work in every major car market. It’s why the new Ford Focus RS will — finally — be coming to American, and the new Ford Mustang will — finally — be offered to eager Europeans.
Sadly, just offering a car in new markets doesn’t mean everyone can buy one. At the show I spoke to a Ford representative from the Netherlands who told me the Mustang, with the V8, will cost the equivalent of $100,000. “The government doesn’t want people to buy the V8, so it gets taxed heavily.” After getting my jaw off the ground I asked him what a 2.3-liter EcoBoost version would cost? “Oh, those cost much less. Only about $50,000.” Well, downright cheap… This brings up another aspect of Geneva, one that hasn’t changed a bit — vehicle pricing. Always a mecca for wealthy boy toys, the 2015 Geneva Motor Show featured plenty of high-end performance and luxury cars. Here are my top 10 picks for the most interesting.
1. Aston Martin Vulcan — Only 24 versions of this mobile British artwork will be issued, and none will be street legal. But with 800 horsepower you can bet these Vulcans will tear up many a track on the weekends. The styling is said to preview what we’ll see on future production models. Works for me.
2. Audi R8 E-Tron — Audi has been teasing us with an all-electric version of the R8 for too long. Now it’s actually going to happen (thank Tesla for pushing the entire market forward on this one). With 456 horsepower, 678 pound-feet of torque and a range of 280 miles it should find plenty of earth-and-performance-friendly buyers.
