Trailers and Film Marketing

Posted on at

Are you part of these people who like or even need to arrive early at the movie theater so they can watch the previews? This is me. I'm a trailer enthusiast. I like to know what movies to look forward to, and get excited after seeing such teasers as the one for 'Matrix' back in the days, or the more recent 'Harry Potter'.

I recently got a bit disappointed when I watched the preview for 'Black Swan'. Being a fan of Natalie Portman, I was looking forward to this movie. I really enjoyed the first part of the preview. The movie looked like a good thriller. But one of the last image with the actress pulling a black feather out of her back completely changed my opinion. Is it a science fiction film? In a second, the movie looked scary. I still want to watch it though, to figure out what the movie is really about and if she really turns into a black swan! If you have seen the movie, don't give it away but tell me if it is worth it!

Going back to previews in general, I was wondering how important trailers are for the success of a movie. I would say they are an essential part of the marketing promotion process. As can be some big actors or directors names or an intriguing poster. The choice of the scenes and music used, the rhythm of the trailer, or the length are main concerns in the making of the preview. I especially appreciate short teasers that tickle my curiosity even though I don't have a single idea of what is the storyline.
I gave the example of 'Matrix' with the famous green letters appearing on a black screen. I also recall the previews for 'Blair Witch Project' and 'Cloverfield' as ones who gave me the envy to watch the movie.

And you? What trailers caught your attention? Which ones had the opposite effect?

Don't forget to watch movies... and trailers!

Happy Holidays!
